One of the best things about a convertible crib is that it grows with your child. When your little one is ready, the same crib you brought home from the hospital can become a toddler bed — no need to buy a whole new piece of furniture. Here's how to make the switch safely and easily.
When is the right time?
Most children are ready to move from a crib to a toddler bed somewhere between 18 months and 3 years old. The clearest sign is climbing: if your child is trying to climb out of the crib, it's time, because a fall from the crib rail is more dangerous than the move itself. Other signs include potty training and simply outgrowing the space.
What you'll need
For most of our cribs you'll need the toddler guardrail, which may be included or sold separately depending on the model. For example, the Alice 4-in-1 Convertible Crib includes its guardrail, while the Kali II Convertible Crib uses the separate Kali Toddler Bed Guardrail. You'll also want the crib's hardware and the instruction sheet that came with it.
Step by step
1. Remove the front crib rail, following the instructions for your model.
2. Lower the mattress support to its lowest setting for stability.
3. Attach the toddler guardrail securely, making sure all screws are fully tightened.
4. Give the bed a firm shake to check that everything is solid before your child uses it.
5. Keep the same firm crib mattress — there's no need to change it at this stage.
Making the move easier
Keep the bed in the same spot in the room, use the same bedding, and stick to your usual bedtime routine. Familiar things help your child feel secure in their "big-kid" bed. It's also a good moment to childproof the room, since your toddler can now get up on their own.
